Dan Evans beats Bagnis to advance into second round of the Australian Open

Britain’s Dan Evans has built on his excellent showing at the Apia International in Sydney by brushing past Argentina’s Facundo Bagnis in straight sets to advance to the second round of the Australian Open.

The match, which finished 7-6 (10-8), 6-3, 6-1, saw the British No.3 save three set points and survive a huge amount of pressure at the end of the first set. After that, however, Bagnis was never the same again and Evans had a comparatively easy time of it in the second and third sets.

Evans now has a real challenge ahead of him in the form of seventh-seed Marin Čilić. It will be the first time the two players have met, but the Brit will be looking to draw on past history of giving top players a tough time.

Speaking of tough times, spare a thought for the ever-entertaining Nick Kyrgios. Despite thrashing Gastão Elias 6-1, 6-2, 6-2, the match was dominated by the Australian’s booming sneeze…
