Everything you need to know about… Naomi Broady

Career

Born in Stockport in 1990, Naomi Broady has won nine singles and 13 doubles titles so far in her ITF career. At the time of writing, she is also the British No.3 and World No.97.

In 2014, she was a wildcard in the main draw of Wimbledon, where she registered her first Grand Slam win in a hard-fought 2-6 7-6 (9-7) 6-0 encounter with the Hungarian Tímea Babos. In the same tournament, Broady reached the quarter-finals of the mixed doubles (a comparatively happy hunting ground for British players in recent years) with her partner Neal Skupski.

One of the highlights of Broady’s career came in 2016 when she pulled off a shock victory over Ana Ivanovic at the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand – a brilliant achievement that was, unfortunately, somewhat overshadowed by controversy in the next round. She eventually exited the tournament after being beaten by American Sloane Stephens.

2016 saw Broady break into the top 100 in the world for the first time by winning the Dow Corning Tennis Classic ITF event in Midland, Michigan. She later reached the semifinals of the Malaysian Open, reaching the final four of a WTA tournament for only the second time, and recorded a victory over former Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki along the way.

Style

Right handed, with a one-handed backhand, Naomi Broady is known for her big serve, making the most of her height to get over the ball and dominate her opponents. For instance, way back at the Citi Open, Washington DC, in 2015, she served a whopping 19 aces in a match against Jarmila Gajdošová – the fourth highest WTA total that season. Elsewhere, Broady has a powerful backhand, as well as often making use of slices and lobs before attacking with a forehand.

About Max Figgett

Max is a writer for Tennis Talent and the owner of a pretty decent forehand, if he says so himself.
