Everything you need to know about… Tara Moore

Career

Born in Hong Kong in 1992, Tara Moore has picked up eight ITF singles trophies and seven ITF doubles titles so far in her career. As a junior, she was coached by trainer-to-the-stars Nick Bollettieri, who called her the most promising youngster in his school.

After a tough couple of years, in which she was asked to leave the National Tennis Centre (NTC) due to poor attitude, Moore beat her first top 100 opponent (Kai-Chen Chang) in 2010 and became a professional later that year.

In 2013, she received a wildcard for Wimbledon, losing to Estonian Kaia Kanepi 7–5 5–7 7–5 in a hard-fought encounter. Her tie in the 2014 championships was similarly difficult and she was beaten by former finalist Vera Zvonareva 4–6, 7–6, 7–9.

Moore failed to reach an ITF final in 2015, but reached her first WTA doubles final, partnering Conny Perin from Switzerland, at the Rio Open in 2016. The pair were beaten by Verónica Cepede Royg and María Irigoyen.

This good form continued into Wimbledon, where Moore reached the second round for the first time by getting past Belgium’s Alison Van Uytvanck. She eventually lost to the Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova before reaching the quarterfinals of the WTA Aegon Open Nottingham event later in the year, beating then World No.67 Christina McHale in straight sets along the way.

Style

Right-handed with a two-handed backhand, Tara Moore is a self-confessed grass specialist – although the bulk of her ITF titles have come on hard courts. She has a high work rate and is capable of delivering both a forehand or backhand winner, but sometimes struggles with consistency.

About Max Figgett

Max is a writer for Tennis Talent and the owner of a pretty decent forehand, if he says so himself.
