The match, which finished 6-2 6-3,  saw the American take control early on and never let it go, breaking Konta’s serve (her most important weapon) four times. The power and precision of Williams’ groundstrokes proved too much for Konta, who saw her run of 18 straight sets swiftly brought to an end.

However, Konta is leaving the tournament with her head held high. “There’s so many things I can learn from that,” she told the BBC. “I don’t think there’s one player that goes up against her and feels they’ve got much of a say in the matches.” She also described the quarter-final against the six-time Australian Open champion as the “best experience of my life”.

Williams was also offered glowing praise for the World No.9. ”Johanna Konta has been playing so well,” she said after the match. “I was in the locker room watching her clean up her matches. She is a future champion here for sure, so I am pleased to get through this.”
