It’s the Quarter Finals of Roland-Garros 2025, and we’ve got 4 exciting matches. Well, it’s 2 now, because I couldn’t publish this article yesterday when I wrote it… but my predictions for those matches were correct (albeit unsurprising), so read the remaining 2 carefully. Clearly I’m prescient.
Musetti v Tiafoe
Musetti currently dominates the YTD W/L quite significantly, and also has a better record on clay than Tiafoe; despite Tiafoe winning both of their last two matchups, Musetti’s last win was on clay. Musetti has also had a great clay season this year, reaching the finals of Monte-Carlo, and the semis of Madrid and Rome. Despite dropping a set in each of his last 2 matches, Musetti has been winning convincingly thus far; if he keeps up this quality heading into this matchup, I would be surprised to see him lose to Tiafoe.
Prediction: Musetti in straight sets
Paul v Alcaraz
Alcaraz has had a spectacular season; winning 2 of the 3 clay Masters (Rome and Monte-Carlo) leading up to RG, he has been in great form and seems to have the confidence to defend his title this year. Paul had a great run in Rome too; despite falling to Sinner in the semis, he was the first player to take a set off the world no. 1 all tournament. His RG run has been slightly less convincing, dropping 5 sets on the way to the quarters. History isn’t on his side either; Alcaraz won the last 3 matches they played, most recently at the 2024 Paris Olympics, on the very same court. However, if Paul can keep a strong mentality and shake some of Alcaraz’s confidence, this could very well go in his favour.
Prediction: Alcaraz in 4 sets
Sinner v Bublik
This unfortunately seems like quite a clear cut match, despite Bublik’s incredible victory against Jack Draper this week. Jannik Sinner has been in formidable form for the entire tournament, not dropping a single set. Following a tremendous run in Rome (his first tournament since the Australian Open), it doesn’t seem like anyone can hold a candle to the Italian. Well, except for one brilliant Spaniard, who is the only player to have beaten Sinner since August last year (where he lost to Rublev in Montreal). That’s not to say Bublik doesn’t stand a chance; when his head is in the game, he plays incredibly, with deft drop shots and rocket powered forehands. Say, that sounds an awful lot like another player Sinner knows…
Prediction: Sinner in straight sets
Zverev v Djokovic
This might be a close one. While Djokovic has historically dominated the German, the last few years have seen Zverev push back against the Djokovic regime, winning 3 of their last 5 meetings. This match will have an eery déjà vu for both; their last meeting on clay was in the quarter finals of Roland-Garros in 2019, where Djokovic defeated Zverev in straight sets. You’d think that winning his 100th ATP title 2 weeks ago would quench the Djokovic fire, but it’s only made him hungrier. As he said this week, “It’s a very pretty number, but 101 victories sounds better.”
