Johanna Konta wins first match of 2020

Jo Konta Monterrey

It’s taken a while, but British No.1 Jo Konta has picked up her first victory of the year against none other than Kim Clijsters, who was playing only her second match since coming out of retirement.

The Monterrey Open match, which finished  6-3 7-5, saw glimpses of Clijsters’ previous power (she had previously retired in 2012), but it’s still early days and we look forward to seeing more of the Belgian four-time Grand Slam champion on court.

From Konta’s perspective, the focus was on managing the pressure and starting to build some form after, let’s face it, a very disappointing start to 2020. Luckily, she did just that – particularly in the lightning-fast first set.
